New Jersey Basement Dehumidifier Installation

Installing Dehumidifiers in Central & Northern NJ and the Jersey Shore

New Jersey experiences many different weather patterns throughout the year. One afternoon the air is dry and the next extremely humid! While each new season brings a fresh change of pace to our own lives, your basement or crawl space isn’t so lucky. Moisture remains prevalent in these areas whether it’s fall, winter, spring, or summer. And with all that moisture comes other problems such as mold, allergens, structural damage, and more. When moisture is getting in the way of your comfort, safety, and peace of mind, send it packing with a basement dehumidifier from Blue Umbrella.

My Home Is Already Waterproofed—Why Do I Need a Dehumidifier?

If the water is gone, shouldn’t the moisture be gone, too? Not necessarily.

If you’ve already waterproofed your space with a French drain system, it’s important to remember that the drain system redirects water from your New Jersey home. However, it doesn’t prevent moisture from entering your foundation altogether. Even though your basement or crawl space stays nice and dry, the moisture is still in the air. That’s why a dehumidifier is crucial to any waterproofing solution. It removes moisture from the air and provides year-round moisture control. Moisture control helps protect your home from:

  • Mold Growth
  • Foul Odors
  • Allergen Buildup
  • Rotting Wood
  • Water Runoff
  • Damp Basement Walls and Floors
  • Belongings Damaged by Water

Blue Umbrella Waterproofing dehumidification system (AprilAire E070) is designed specifically for your basement, appropriately sized with a powerful fan keeping air circulating in the space while removing excess humidity. We are New Jersey’s trusted basement dehumidifier installation experts.

Get Rid of Smells and Allergens by Getting Rid of Moisture

While you most likely install a basement dehumidifier in your New Jersey home to remove excess moisture, you may not realize the additional benefit of removing allergens. Dust mites and mold spores from the basement can travel up into the rest of your home and can aggravate and even cause the development of allergies for you or your family members. A basement dehumidifier can keep relative humidity levels (RHL) in the basement low enough to cause any existing mold and dust mites to dry out. The dehumidifier also cleans the air in the space, filtering out any existing dropping and spores before they can harm you. The end result is a fresh-smelling and healthy basement in your New Jersey home, free of allergens, helping you protect your family.

How Basement Dehumidifiers Work

  1. Damp Air is Pulled In & Filtered. Dehumidification of your basement starts with the basement dehumidifier fan pulling basement air into your specialized basement dehumidifier unit. The entering air passes through a high-efficiency air filter, removing dust, allergens, and other irritants from the basement.
  2. Moisture is Removed. The entering air then passes over the cold evaporator coil. The moisture from the humid basement air condenses, and droplets form on the coil and then fall into a drain pan, which leads to a water hose that transports the removed water from the dehumidifier into a basement sump pump which pumps the water up and out of your home into an exterior yard drainage system. (We also recommend a battery backup sump pump).
  3. The Clean Air is Heated. The now cold, dry, filtered air passes over the condenser coils and is heated back to near room temperature and pushed back into the basement. The dehumidifier runs as necessary to maintain a safe humidity level in the space.

How Do You Install a Basement Dehumidifier?

Installing a basement dehumidifier in your home requires a professional the experience of a New Jersey basement waterproofing expert. An expert can ensure that your dehumidifier complies with local codes and is set up and functioning correctly.

  1. Choose the Right Dehumidifier. Most of the dehumidifiers that you would find in Lowes or Home Depot do not have the right capacity and can generally only handle a medium-sized room (around 250 square feet). These dehumidifiers also lack a powerful fan and high enough airflow, measured in cubic feet of movement per minute (CFM), to cycle the air in the basement frequently enough. If placed in a basement, these inferior dehumidifiers will fail to reach the target humidity and will be strained to try to do so, shortening the lifespan of the dehumidifier. Blue Umbrella uses a specialized AprilAire dehumidifier specifically designed for basements in New Jersey. These long-lasting, reliable dehumidifiers can handle a space the size of your basement and consistently maintain a safe humidity level.
  2. Set Up Dehumidifier Drainage. Basement dehumidifiers collect water from the air, storing it in an internal drip tray or tank. In cheap dehumidifiers, the tank fills you have to pull out the tank and empty it yourself. Instead of using a storage tank, Blue Umbrella’s dehumidifier’s connect to a water hose that transports the water to a sump pump which pumps the collected water out of the basement as part of a complete interior basement waterproofing system.
  3. Set the Preferred Ambient Humidity level. With the plugin installed and connected to the sump pump with backup pump, the humidifier is set aiming for a number between 35 to 50 percent relative humidity.
  4. Maintain the Basement Dehumidifier. Basement dehumidifiers work best when they are properly maintained. Inspections, cleaning, and replacement of the filter are part of proper maintenance. The good news is that Blue Umbrella’s maintenance plan takes care of all of this and more, ensuring your basement stays permanently clean, dry, and safe. We will have one of our basement experts visit your home to clean any build-up within the dehumidifier, replace the existing filter and inspect the dehumidifier coils ensuring they are undamaged and working correctly.
